Monument Planning

Monument Advisory Committee (MAC)

The primary role of the Monument Advisory Committee (MAC) is to gather information through various types of meetings and provide it as advice to the BLM, in preparation for the BLM to develop its Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Monument. The MAC was formed through a process that included invitation to the public for interested parties to apply. From the applicants, a set of names was forwarded to the Governor and then to the Secretary of the Interior who made the final appointments. The appointments were finalized in May 2003, with each participant appointed to serve a four-year term.

There were seven categories for committee members:

  1. Montezuma County Commission representative
  2. Dolores County Commission rep.
  3. Two tribal/pueblo reps
  4. Two cultural resources reps (one regional, one local)
  5. Livestock grazing permittee
  6. Fluid minerals rep
  7. Three people representing any of the categories of private landowners, national or regional environmental orgs, ORV users, commercial recreation, and at-large with no financial interest in the Monument.

The first meeting of the group was in December 2003, with monthly meetings since that time. Below is the set of recommendations that the MAC presented to BLM in the spring of 2004. It is projected that the response to these recommendations from the BLM will be available during the Summer of 2005:
