Final
Transportation Recommendations
for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument
Goals:
- Provide
access to the resources of the Monument by the various permitted and
non-permitted users.
- Provide
protection of the resources for the present and future users.
- Avoid
detrimental impacts of the resources by designating an appropriate number
of access points to the Monument.
- Avoid
detrimental impacts of privately held resources within and immediately
adjacent to the Monument boundaries.
- Work
with the National Park Service to ensure sufficient access is provided
to the four units of Hovenweep National Monument located within the
Monument.
- Provide
infrastructure access for maintenance (e.g., to facilities and roads),
exploration, wild fire control, law enforcement, rescue efforts, control
of noxious weeds (e.g., tamarisk), seeding efforts, clean up and other
efforts.
- Develop
a long range trail and road plan with input from all users (e.g., private
land owners), including the Monument Advisory Committee, Montezuma and
Dolores County Planning personnel, BLM personnel, and contractors.
- Stop
the proliferation of cross-country travel by motorized and mechanized
vehicles. (This goal needs final approval by the Advisory Committee.)
